Once again I hosted some students from Lancaster school at my martial arts academy. Its always a pleasure to have Simon and his students visit, train and get their certificates at the end of their term of training as part of their PE.

Summer is here - Top tips on how to avoid drinks being spiked. * Open drinks yourself and make sure they are sealed beforehand.
* Don’t accept drinks from other people
* Stay with colleagues at all times
* Keep your drink with you at all times
* Don’t share drinks
* Don’t party on punchbowls or group drinks
* If someone you don’t trust completely offers to get you a drink go with them
* If something tastes salty, very sweet or smells strange then avoid it
Too many assume these warnings are only for single young females out partying, that is a huge mistake, they apply to everyone regardless of status, occupation, sex or position.
There are many drugs that when added to a drink that leave you either laid out completely or have a slightly less toxic effect.
The time it takes for the drugs to take effect differs and so does the time they remain active. Rohypnol for example takes about 30 minutes to take effect whereas Ketamine is very fast acting.
Depending on the drug and the amount used you might seem drunk which is why people sometimes don’t come to your aid, especially when the person (that kind stranger, but you are now compromised and unable to tell anyone you don’t know them) holding and assisting you says don’t worry they will look after you and get you home or back to your hotel.
These drugs can leave you in a state where you are unprotected against a huge range of crimes from pickpocketing, cashpoint theft, through kidnapping to rape.
Total collapse may not be the desired effect from the attacker. They may prefer a state of relaxed compliance so that suspicion isn’t raised if staff at the venue are not involved.
Drugs like this can be easily added to drinks by either the bar staff or someone tampering with a drink especially after a couple of alcoholic drinks have had their effect, so you don’t notice.
Open topped drinks are a significant risk area especially when left while you go to the toilet, dancefloor or leave them unattended in any other way. So, for instance draft beer in a glass or a glass of wine are easy targets. A bottled beer is easier to protect, can easily be carried with you and is less likely to be tampered with prior to being served.
As with many assaults splitting the heard is the method of many assailants. So, if out for a drink with colleagues in the evening be additionally alert if you are separated from the group. Once no longer part of the group you are potentially a future victim.
If you go out with friends, family or colleagues stay as a team throughout, do not leave anyone behind.
This type of situational awareness is what I cover in my workshops, if your team haven't yet had any training on how to stay safe 24 * 7 then drop me a message.

Yes, I do training workshops. Is it tacky and pushy to say so? A great trainer said to me you have a responsibility to serve people and when you hold back you prevent them from learning from you. What they learn can literally save their lives. get out there and shout about what you do.
Well..... To be honest that isn’t me. I kind if wish it was, but it isn’t. In a world where marketing rather than content rules that may not be my best personal trait.
Yes, I love helping people to stay safe by learning situational awareness and real self defence but the shouting about it bit isn’t really me.
Until I see people who know little and talk bs shouting the loudest and putting people at risk by teaching self defence which is so bad I’m scared for their safety. So why not tell the world what I do.
I’m from a corporate background with well over 40 years of martial arts training, a masters in business and also counter terrorism and I speak honestly. In a language and in scenarios your people understand and can relate to.
My workshops will give your people skills they can use time and again to understand how situational awareness can save improve their personal safety or possibly even save their lives.

Where should you sit on a train to improve your personal safety and security. I took a train to London again this week and although they are busier its no where near as full as pre-covid.
The empty train got me thinking. At a workshop a few years ago someone asked this question as they had a bad experience.
Now firstly there is no perfect answer, it depends on the risk. So variables such as the country and what the main risks in that area are, all come into play.
However my first suggestion would be to sit with your back to a wall or divide. This means that no one is behind your back where you cant see them.
Secondly I would sit near but not right by the door. This gives you the ability to exit if needed but not be pushed out or grabbed and dragged off. It also prevents an attacker running in and stabbing or striking you without warning.
Advice like that always seems slightly drastic. Over the years as I work with people, bad experiences are often far more common than most realise.

What you can learn from the Amir Khan mugging.I was pleased, although I’m not sure that is the correct term to use, to see he gave up his watch without a fight. that goes against most peoples instincts but fighting back to save a possession is what gets you killed. The watch was reportedly very expensive but its likely to have been insured anyway.
No possession is worth your life and thats something people always have a problem initially accepting in the workshops I run.
I have seen a lot of criticism online of his wife who ran from the scene of the attack. I think this is misplaced and incorrect. Firstly with a gun at your husbands head most people would panic and run or alternatively freeze, unable to move.
From my point of view if I was in that situation I would want my wife to run to safety. If for some reason they decided to shoot, take a hostage or physical conflict occurred the last thing you want is to have to fight for two. Fighting for your own life is hard enough without having to be concerned for someone else. ( For readers overseas remember in the UK carrying firearms or weapons for self protection is illegal.)
My final thought is that he was setup. It could be that as he walked the street someone sent a message out, it could be the guys walking away on their phones at the start of this video or it could be someone who knew he was going to be there that set him up. This clearly demonstrates that situational awareness and caution over information on your movements should be a priority in prevention.
As it is both him and his wife although probably traumatised and safe and well in a situation that could have been much worse.
This is exactly the sort of situation we cover in workshops. Businesses often think it wont happen or is not important until there is a tradgedy. I want to change this and run workshops before attendees tell me how their collleague was raped, drugged, kidnapped, mugged or assaulted.

Peoples support of Ukrainian refugees is amazing however I do hope that care is being taken. Unfortunately, from the work I do I know how evil and disgusting some people can be.
I would hate to hear in future that these victims of the war become trafficked and victims for a 2nd time.
