The stairs are always a dangerous route
I would say this is the standard response when discussing whether to use the stairs or a lift. Making assumptions is a fairly natural response often based on learned behaviour or stories from others.
Its true that some sets of stairs are awful whether they be in a hotel, office block or residential setting. They may be dark, rarely used and with poor visibility around corners making it very difficult to see who is in front or behind you.
However do not forget that a lift could have similar issues as its basically a metal box normally with only one way in and out, making it very difficult to escape from should the need arise.
Assumptions can be a dangerous element in your personal safety that could easily be taken advantage of by a would be assailant.
