Why risk your life and the future of your loved ones for what you would earn in less than 10 minutes, your ego can put you at serious risk.

Why risk your life and the future of your loved ones for what you would earn in less than 10 minutes, your ego can put you at serious risk.

The thief, stalker, terrorist, assailant, or drug addict needing their next high has made their career not by working long hours in the office but by long hours committing crime.

Like you, they also studied, not for a degree but body language and how to identify the most vulnerable.

They have probably already served at least one prison term and are not scared of any repercussions.

Ask people how much money they would give to be able to return home that night, safe, rather than their loved ones panicking as they haven’t returned home. That hard reality needs to be understood and its one we discuss repeatedly throughout my workshops.

For years I have told the story of a very senior member of staff who attended one of my workshops. He stated that no one would take his wallet, instead he would fight. How dare they take what he had worked so hard for. When asked if he would show his wallet, we found only a tiny amount of cash alongside plastic cards and a driving licence. Literally zero value.

What you can learn from the Amir Khan mugging.I was pleased, although I’m not sure that is the correct term to use, to see he gave up his watch without a fight. that goes against most peoples instincts but fighting back to save a possession is what gets you killed. The watch was reportedly very expensive but its likely to have been insured anyway. No possession is worth your life and thats something people always have a problem initially accepting in the workshops I run.I have seen a lot of criticism online of his wife who ran from the scene of the attack. I think this is misplaced and incorrect. Firstly with a gun at your husbands head most people would panic and run or alternatively freeze, unable to move. From my point of view if I was in that situation I would want my wife to run to safety. If for some reason they decided to shoot, take a hostage or physical conflict occurred the last thing you want is to have to fight for two. Fighting for your own life is hard enough without having to be concerned for someone else. ( For readers overseas remember in the UK carrying firearms or weapons for self protection is illegal.)My final thought is that he was setup. It could be that as he walked the street someone sent a message out, it could be the guys walking away on their phones at the start of this video or it could be someone who knew he was going to be there that set him up. This clearly demonstrates that situational awareness and caution over information on your movements should be a priority in prevention. As it is both him and his wife although probably traumatised and safe and well in a situation that could have been much worse. This is exactly the sort of situation we cover in workshops. Businesses often think it wont happen or is not important until there is a tradgedy. I want to change this and run workshops before attendees tell me how their collleague was raped, drugged, kidnapped, mugged or assaulted. youtu.be/PfWxl2xH#peoplep#humanresourceso#safetysafety ... Peoples support of Ukrainian refugees is amazing however I do hope that care is being taken. Unfortunately, from the work I do I know how evil and disgusting some people can be. I would hate to hear in future that these victims of the war become trafficked and victims for a 2nd time. #people #ukraine lnkd.in/eVapepDv ... See MoreSee Less

Room price does not equate to personal safety This short clip shows the door inside an expensive hotel. They get credit for having a spyhole but the only lock is the electronic door card. There are no secondary mechanical locks such as a bolt or chain Some not so nice people might believe that guests in an expensive hotel room would have valuables worth stealing. So apart from the risk of physical or sexual assault by someone gaining access to the room there is the issue of you highlighting relative wealth. This is an ideal scenario for using a Doorjammer or door wedge to add a layer of additional protection. Every time I give a workshop there is always someone that has a lightbulb moment recognising that a hotel room is not your sanctuary. There could be any number of people that could gain access to your room, including security, maintenance, housekeeping, room service along with those who shouldn't legitimately have access.Fortunately for the majority of us for most of the time never fall prey to these issues but at least recognise they are there and mitigate your risks.#people #safety #training #HR #hotel ... People are looking for more from their employers. Rather than a flash mission statement in reception (1990s) teambuilding (2000s) benefits and stability (2010s) people are now looking for more.Working from home and hybrid working for many is just expected. Organisations that show they do actually care for their people will be those not struggling to keep and find highflyers and dedicated passionate people. In the past few months I have seen this as one of the key incentives for new clients contacting me for workshops. its certainly different from a few years ago when it was about insurance and duty of care. Providing workshops to give people the understanding and tools needed to completely change their ability to ensure their personal safety definitely meets this need. The added bonus for the organisation is it makes so much business sense as well. Drop me a message to see how I can help your organisation. #business #HR #people #safety ... See MoreSee Less

Why hold a workshop people already know all this stuff !! No, they probably don’t.In every workshop I have held, stories are told by the attendees that friends and colleagues had not heard previously. It takes a while for people to relax and get into the flow of the conversation but once one person starts the information flows. Getting this started comes from the scenarios and stories including mistakes I have made personally that people can relate to.Once they see themselves in these situations or an incident, they recognise comes up then the stories really come to life. By the way the stories have no relationship to seniority, the same occurs to the most junior through to the most senior directors which is why many organisations prefer attendees for each workshop to be of similar level within the hierarchy, although I have noticed this start to be less noticeable in the past few years. In organisations just like yours, I have heard and discussed everything including sexual assault, mugging, fraud, domestic violence, theft, terrorism, kidnap, and physical assault. At least 90% of those incidents and experiences have never been discussed with HR or colleagues and many not reported to the police. I have heard on several occasions, “It was easier to leave”.Incidents that affect people, occur at home, to and from the place of work, during the workday, travelling and after work. Where do your responsibilities and duty of care start and end? Is it during the working day, is that only in the office or while working from home or off site? Is it as they travel to and from their place of work or on behalf of the business? Or, as I am noticing more and more, some organisations are taking a holistic whole life approach and supporting employees throughout. Most people have no idea on how to prevent the same situation occurring again which is a worrying situation that many will carry unconsciously with them. This could result in people leaving, underperforming, or suffering from stress and anxiety.During the workshops we work through a typical day of those attending and using a simple 3 step system, identify, understand, and learn how to manage possible risks. Everyone gets a chance to work through scenarios and then through a team challenge at the end we run through a worked example to make sure everyone truly understands the concepts and how to use that system all the time in the future. As always get in touch if you believe supporting your people in this way would be a usef#HRs#peoplew#training #Teaml#businessng #team #business ...
