The big problem is you are not protecting your staff fully.
It’s an old saying that the chain is only as strong as its weakest link.
When I talk to HR or Security Directors and we discuss the safety of the people in the organisation most have something in place.
Depending on the organisation it could be travel safety training, terrorism awareness, kidnap training or abuse support for those working from home.
However very few have it covered end to end and that’s an issue.
Rather than responding after each incident to address that specific event then the next and the one after that why not attempt to provide your people the support they need.
When I was running a fraud and revenue assurance department it soon became apparent quick fixes could cause problems elsewhere. Instead, every attempt was made to look at solving the whole system every time an issue arose.
The same should be done training your people to remain safe. Not only domestic abuse while working from home while ignoring safe travel or terrorism advice until that becomes a problem.
Awareness and personal risk training allows you to support your people through the whole of their day, regardless of where and how they are working, skills that are invaluable today.

The thief, stalker, terrorist, assailant, or drug addict needing their next high has made their career not by working long hours in the office but by long hours committing crime.
Like you, they also studied, not for a degree but body language and how to identify the most vulnerable.
They have probably already served at least one prison term and are not scared of any repercussions.
Ask people how much money they would give to be able to return home that night, safe, rather than their loved ones panicking as they haven’t returned home. That hard reality needs to be understood and its one we discuss repeatedly throughout my workshops.

For someone who teaches people to be aware and how to stay safe tragedies like the death of Sarah Everard leave me saddened but also with mixed feelings.
Of course, I believe everyone should have not just the right but the ability to walk alone anywhere at any time.
However time and again it has been shown that this is not the case.
Unfortunately I do have concerns that as always some will exploit each tragedy to push their own agenda. Piggybacking onto devastatingly bad news to push their own and sometimes divisive beliefs, politics or cause.
Society wide issues, be that attacks on women, domestic abuse, knife attacks, terrorism or drug problems require society wide solutions and approaches if they are to be improved upon.
From the work I do I can assure you there are good and bad people everywhere you look. Fortunately I believe our society as a whole has far more good than bad and the way to help improve things is to include all of those in working towards everyone's safety.

Lockdown has meant a huge change to both my businesses, how about you?
I see those businesses as 2 sides of the same coin or as someone said opposite ends of the same spectrum.
1 side of the coin is the work I do with businesses, workshops covering awareness, avoiding conflict, and understanding and managing personal risk to stay safe. The other business is my martial arts academy, this is all about fitness, self defence and training for competition.
Both have moved to zoom but personally I can't wait to get back to meeting people and the interactions that are part of my company workshops. Zoom is an amazing tool but I love the interaction and level of discussion you get when actually with people face to face.
Within the martial arts business the same applies. Again zoom is incredible but not the same as actually training and coaching people. I have also missed the buzz of cornering fighters in competition and already have people booked for boxing, MuayThai and MMA bouts.
I realise I am lucky as both have remained successful throughout the past year but what if anything have you missed ?

Workshops are effective as they get people talking about the material you are presenting. I haven’t met anybody who likes being talked at as their preferred learning style. Even worse is the infamous boring PowerPoint presentation where someome reads off the slides.
Stories not only give people topics and thoughts to discuss they also kick off the persons imagination. They can picture themselves in that situation, how they might feel or react. They could bring back memories and incidents they have experienced, read about, or seen on TV.
I want to be helping people develop skills that last and stay with them not just in the few hours that day but for years to come. Yes, tools that I provide help but what stops someone putting those aside as they leave and instead embedding them in their lives is that feeling that they matter and are relevant to them personally.
Nothing is more important than learning how to stay safe, but many organisations just expect their people to get by. That is not the best way to ensure your people remain safe at work and throughout their lives. Awareness and basic security training should be provided for everyone.

One of the questions I am asked a lot is how to look after your partner.
Now this raises a number of questions, firstly why do you think they need looking after or are you overconfident yourself and as a result at more risk than your partner.
Maybe your partner should be looking after you. Maybe your misplaced confidence is whats putting you both at risk.
Overconfidence is a huge problem in self-protection.
What has made you think you have the skill, training, aggression, experience, timing and strength to make you feel you are capable of protecting yourself and others.
I am always talking about awareness and evaluating risk. Avoiding bad places and situations is key in staying safe.
Understanding risk and how to manage it is by far the best way to keep you and your partner safe.
However if all else fails and you have to fight for your life what training and skill do you both have.
So, before you ask about looking after your partner make sure you think about risk and your ability.
Yes I teach people how to survive serious confrontation but I also teach a lot more how to understand and manage risk. Avoidance is how the majority of people can survive and unless conflict is your trade I would suggest that is a far better way to proceed.

Sharing tips is all part of running my workshops. It does not all have to be my unique content, in fact there is not much that is new and absolutely unique in many industries.
I believe great training is about making it matter and real to the learner. To me it’s not about talking at people and an endless stream of PowerPoint slides.
It is about assimilating all my learning, combining that with other sources and taking sometimes difficult, complex concepts and advice and passing that on in a way that others can relate to.
I want a learner to be able to recognise and understand why its relevant, how it applies to them and how they can utilise it time and again. Interaction, questions, discussion, and stories all help provide that.
There is nothing people like better than a story of how or why I did something different to the advice I have just provided. Encouraging discussion on why that happened, the consequences, the potential risks or danger that action may have led to.
I have found people relate to that far more than trying to pretend perfection and it often leads to examples from their own lives changing it from a vague concept to a reality that means something to them personally and something that people won’t forget as they walk out of the room.
