I feel privileged to be able to be in a position to be able to help others.Once again, my Martial Arts business hosted some of the students from the Lancaster SEN school Southend. It's always a fun session and a way the students can test their progress from the PE sessions they have. For several years we have worked with Simon who teaches at Lancaster to develop kickboxing in the schools PE syllabus. This visit after already achieving bronze, silver and gold certificates we had our 1st ever student achieve platinum. An amazing achievement. As they break for the summer holiday teachers and students can be justifiably proud of the work they achieved.#school #teachers #Sen #training ... See MoreSee Less

Tradition matters and the reason why I havent been posting tips on situational awareness and personal security.Every year I take a group of students from my Martial Arts club to Thailand to train. They are often surprised the training is exactly the same as they are used to. There is no magic technique or trick they hadnt been taught. That can often deflate people as they then realise its just hard training and doing the drills. Damn.Of course they improve they get the chance to train 2 hours twice a day. 4 hours every day is hard but that amount of effort ensures they all improve. Thai boxing involves a number of traditions which in this country can often be watered down. However in Thailand they still hold true. Some of these include stepping into the ring over the top rope instead of going through the ropes. The routine called the Wai Kru which many westerners call a dance and the use of items such as the Mongkhron or headband which has its link to Buddhism . I always say to my students that to compete in Thailand as the only Farang or foreigner on a show is an honour. It is an experience they will remember for ever. My time away studying something Ive been involved in since a young teen is an honour and privilege. It does however mean I spend all my time on that business and not on my situational awareness training. However staying fit and mentally healthy is vital for all of us and all my years in martial arts have sustained me through a challenging corporate career and in 16 years of running my own businesses.#training #situationalawareness #mentalhealth #security ... On top of the world. Well not quite - its no Everest but it felt good and what a view across the English countryside.I spend most of my time either in front of a pc screen, running situational awareness workshops, coaching self defence or martial arts. Getting away for our wedding anniversary and enjoying some down time has been amazing. Batteries are now recharged. #situationalawareness #workshops #coaching #recharge ... See MoreSee Less

Tip of the week - How you get in and out of your car can leave you vulnerable to assault or robbery. In my 3 step system transitions are always considered but they are what most people forget or brush over. That change between two known states is a time of significant risk. With one leg inside and one outside of the car and the persons thoughts already moving onto the next part of their day they are more vulnerable than they need be.Instead of this which is the normal method most adopt try sitting 1st with both legs facing out and then swinging both into the vehicle together. It allows your alertness and situational awareness to remain active and enables you to employ both legs to kick off any assailant with you getting trapped half in the vehicle.#situationalawareness #people #assault #safety ...
